5 Things to keep in mind before traveling to India! (4 minutes read)

India is one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the world. The country is full of mysteries and can be really unexpected at a lot of occasions, due to its vast diversity.

You would probably have various expectations from the things you’ve either seen or heard about India, but it is a lot more than that.

The country is both modern and conservative.

So, if you’re travelling to India, especially ‘solo’, you should be aware of the following:

  1. Learn both history and present about the city/place you’re planning to visit.

Be aware about the place you’re planning to visit so that you make the most of it. You’ll know how to adapt, what to do and what not to do when you’re in that particular region. If it is a conservative area or a modern city. The kind of people living in that region. What all precautions you can take if needed. If you’re going to have a big language barrier or not and many such barriers. All of this can help you prepare accordingly.

2. Avoid wearing short clothes and Don’t be over friendly.

Being a foreigner would already get you a lot of stares and trust me you wouldn’t want to attract any more unwanted attention by wearing short clothes. Just try not be that revealing. Moreover Indian women are usually wearing clothes covering up their whole body.
Try not be over friendly with strangers as they can take it in a wrong context and can give them an impression of you being someone, whom they can take advantage of easily.

3. Avoid being alone in secluded areas especially at night.

Never be alone in secluded area especially at night, you never know what mishap can take place. It is even forbidden(not lawfully) for Indian people. Even if you’re at a bar/lounge/club prefer not getting drunk and don’t trust random strangers if you’re alone for quite obvious reasons. You’ve to take care of your own self, so be careful. You can keep a Pepper Spray for further safety which are not expensive at all. You can check a few of them HERE.

4. Don’t rely on street food.

Indian street food is utterly unhygienic, there is no sanitation amongst the street vendors. It can get you sick, really sick and that too for a long time and hence spoiling your trip. There are tons of other food outlets from where you can have good Indian food and you can find almost all of them HERE (the best site for such things).

5. Be aware of scams and practice your bargaining skills.

Stay away from people who usually try to lure you to buy things or offers, they’re probably fooling you. There’s a high possibility they’re not authentic or genuine so be confident and assertive about your refusal. You have to be confident about your decision and be very straight. Being a foreigner they will try to sell you things for a lot more expensive price than it actually is, so learn to bargain.

Of course, there are a lot more things that you should keep in mind before going to India.

We would love, if you share with us your experience and ideas!

Stay inspired and positive!

  1. Great post and site!

I haven’t been to India since 1985. I solo-backpacked for 12 months back then only spending one month in India, which wasn’t enough and I’d love to return. 🙂

Many thanks for stopping by and following my Travel and Photography site.
